The next chapter of United Baristas

Updates to United Baristas Articles

Recent updates to Articles is the first stage of a new United Baristas design.
Published
The next chapter of our journey begins with updates to Articles.
United Baristas has long offered a unique blend of thought-provoking ideas and actionable information. Our articles have become increasingly comprehensive as we tackle the complex opportunities and challenges facing the industry. The old templates were stretched to their limits, so we've introduced a new design that makes searching, browsing, and reading easier.

Articles

The new design improves legibility, especially for long-form articles on mobile devices. You can use in-article navigation to jump between sections. Additionally, we've begun revising audio options, so you can listen to key articles while on the go.
There are already new articles available on United Baristas, and we have updated key and popular articles from our archive.
Tasty, tasty coffee

Introducing the Coffee Tasting Framework

United Baristas wants to kickstart a community-wide conversation on how we can better communicate coffee’s distinctive flavours. Better tasting notes are fundamental for the industry’s viable future. More accurate communication can empower consumers and support specialty coffee’s price premium.
Identifying coffee's distinctive flavours

Reinventing the wheel

Coffee tasting notes are broken because the SCA’s Flavour Wheel is incoherent. We need a new framework that’s accurate, intuitive and grounded in how people actually perceive flavour.

How to taste coffee: A guide for baristas, roasters and coffee drinkers

Tasting coffee isn’t hard, but doing it well requires a clear structure and an impartial appraisal. With this guide, you’ll learn how to identify a coffee's defining characteristics and understand why some coffees are tastier than others. Brew a single-estate coffee – and let’s begin.

Introducing Collections and updating Series

Many articles thematically connect. To make themes easier to explore, articles are now organsied by both Collection and Series.
Collections are the highest level of grouping, bringing together articles around key United Baristas themes. Series are designed to explore subjects. If you find an article interesting, use the Collections and Series to delve deeper.
