The role of technology to make more energy-efficient espresso machines

World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies explains some of the energy efficiency technologies in Victoria Arduino’s Eagle One

Espresso machines are a key cause of coffee’s carbon footprint. We have previously explained how the carbon footprint from espresso machines is more than the carbon emissions from coffee’s production, processing, export and roasting combined. It’s a challenge the coffee industry needs to tackle ahead on if we are to play our part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preventing a 1.5 degree centigrade temperature increase and safeguarding the future of coffee growing.

To reduce coffee’s carbon footprint we are going to have to implement:

  • Behavioural changes: wasting less hot water when purging and not drawing off hot water for uses other than making espresso
  • Operational changes: using more-efficient water heaters for tea preparation and drinks such as the Americano
  • Technological changes: use of technologies to create more energy efficient espresso machines

Reducing coffee’s carbon footprint through technology

Victoria Arduino’s Eagle One is the first of a new generation of espresso machines which use the combination of smaller boilers, flash elements in the group heads and a heat recapture system to lower the electricity consumption by as much as one-third.
